Best Fence Installation in Northridge
Aluminum fence, privacy fence and driveway gates for Northridge homes. Supplied from our nearby Panorama City showroom and installed through our licensed installation partners.
Fencing for Northridge Homes
Northridge is a mostly flat neighborhood of single-family homes in the north-central San Fernando Valley, home to Cal State Northridge and a short drive from our showroom. Flat, regular lots make it one of the simplest places in Los Angeles to plan a fence.
With few slopes to work around, Northridge projects are usually about choosing the right look and getting the most out of the height the city allows. Typical jobs are a privacy fence along the side and rear property lines, a lower, open fence in front, and a driveway gate that matches.
Because we are so close, it is easy to visit the showroom, see the finishes in daylight, and take home a clear plan.
Northridge Fence Height Rules
Northridge is part of the City of Los Angeles, so city zoning rules decide fence heights.
- Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential (R) zones, or 6 feet on lots zoned A or RA. Taller front fences need City Planning approval.
- Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide and outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, or lots narrower than 40 feet, the limit is 6 feet.
- Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit from LADBS.
Most Northridge lots are flat and at least 40 feet wide, so 8-foot side and rear fences are usually allowed, with 3.5 feet in the front yard. Lots zoned RA can have front fences up to 6 feet. Confirm your parcel’s zone on ZIMAS.

What Shapes a Fence in Northridge
Getting the most from a flat lot
With the full 8 feet usually available on the side and rear, a tall privacy fence can screen out neighbors and street noise completely. Many owners pair it with an open front fence that keeps the house welcoming.
Near Cal State Northridge
Homes near the CSUN campus often want more privacy and a secure driveway gate. A closed horizontal fence and a matching sliding gate handle both.
Mid-century and ranch homes
Much of Northridge was built after World War II. Horizontal aluminum slats suit these low, wide homes and update the look without fighting the architecture.
Replacing block walls and old fencing
Aluminum can replace tired wood fencing, and wall toppers can add height and a modern finish to an existing block wall.
Summer heat
Valley summers are hot and sunny. Powder-coated aluminum holds its color and will not warp, split or need staining.
Planning around neighbors
On a flat grid, fences are shared with neighbors on two or three sides. It helps to talk with them early about height, style and which side faces out. Aluminum panels look finished on both faces, which keeps everyone happy.
Choosing a finish
Black is the most popular finish in Northridge because it fades into landscaping and suits ranch, mid-century and updated homes alike. Wood-look aluminum is a good option if you want warmth without staining.
Earthquake-ready construction
Northridge knows earthquakes better than most places. A lightweight aluminum fence on properly set posts puts far less mass on its footings than a tall block wall, and individual panels can be replaced without rebuilding the whole run.
