Fencing for Calabasas Homes

Calabasas has been its own city since 1991, set in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains at the western edge of Los Angeles County. Neighborhoods like Calabasas Hills, The Oaks, Westridge and The Colony are known for gated entries, oak-covered hillsides and carefully kept streetscapes.

Calabasas does not follow the City of Los Angeles fence rules. It has its own zoning code, with a front-yard height rule you will not find anywhere else nearby, and most neighborhoods add HOA guidelines on top. Getting the plan right before ordering saves time and resubmittals.

We have already supplied a Hampton gate and fence for a Calabasas home, and our Westlake Village project next door shows the same series on a finished driveway.

Calabasas Fence Height Rules

Calabasas sets its own fence rules in its development code and its zoning clearance handout. The key points for homeowners:

  • Front yard, stepped heights: a fence can be 42 inches tall at the front property line, and may rise in steps as it moves back: 48 inches at 2 feet back, 54 at 4 feet, 60 at 6 feet, 66 at 8 feet, and 6 feet once it is 10 feet back from the front line.
  • No planning review needed: wood, vinyl or wrought-iron style fences 6 feet or lower, in single-family (RS) zones and outside the front yard.
  • Zoning clearance needed: walls over 42 inches and retaining walls over 36 inches.
  • Retaining walls: up to 6 feet.

Ask the city’s planning counter how an aluminum fence is classified for your lot, especially in the front yard.

What Shapes a Fence in Calabasas

The stepped front-yard rule

Calabasas’s sliding scale means a front fence can be taller the further it sits from the property line. A common design keeps a low, open fence at the line and sets a taller gated entry back toward the house.

HOA neighborhoods

Many Calabasas neighborhoods have HOAs with rules on fence style, color and height. Check yours first. We can provide product photos and specs for your application.

Wildfire country

Calabasas has thousands of acres in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and the 2018 Woolsey Fire reached the city. The city points residents in these zones to the state fire-resistant building rules and defensible-space requirements. Our Zone 0 fence guide covers the area right around the home.

Hillside and oak lots

Sloped lots need stepped panels and careful post placement, and protected oaks can affect where posts go. Plan the run with your landscape in mind.

Gated driveways

Long driveways and gated frontages are common. A sliding or double swing aluminum gate in the same series as the fence keeps the entry consistent.

Decorative accents

Decorative aluminum panels, like the Leaf panels at our Westlake Village project, can frame an entry or screen a patio within the fence design.

Low maintenance for a high standard

Calabasas streetscapes are kept to a high standard, and a faded or peeling fence stands out quickly. Powder-coated aluminum keeps its finish without painting or staining, so the fence still looks right years after the HOA approved it.
