Fencing for Granada Hills Homes
Granada Hills is one of the closest neighborhoods to our showroom, a short drive up the 405. Its southern half is a grid of mid-century ranch homes on generous lots; the northern half rises into the foothills of the Santa Susana and San Gabriel mountains.
Granada Hills owners often come to us replacing an old wood or chain-link fence that has reached the end of its life. Wide ranch lots mean long side and rear runs, and many homes have a driveway that would benefit from a proper gate. Up in the foothills, slopes and wildfire risk change the conversation.
Being this close means you can visit the showroom easily, compare styles in person, and bring the whole family to choose.
Granada Hills Fence Height Rules
Granada Hills is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, so fence heights follow the city zoning code.
- Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential (R) zones, or 6 feet on lots zoned A or RA. Taller front fences need City Planning approval.
- Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide and outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, or lots narrower than 40 feet, the limit is 6 feet.
- Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit from LADBS.
On the flat southern streets, most ranch lots are wide enough for 8-foot side and rear fences. In the northern foothills, hillside-area lots are limited to 6 feet.

What Shapes a Fence in Granada Hills
Balboa Highlands historic district
Balboa Highlands, a 1960s Eichler neighborhood in Granada Hills, is a city Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. Exterior changes there, which can include fences, may need review. If you live in the tract, check with the city’s Office of Historic Resources before ordering. The clean lines of aluminum often suit mid-century architecture well.
Replacing old wood and chain link
Many fences here are decades old. Aluminum replaces them with something that will not rot, rust or need painting, and a matching driveway gate finishes the frontage.
Long runs on ranch lots
Wide lots mean more fence, so long-term upkeep matters more than usual. Powder-coated aluminum keeps maintenance close to zero.
Foothill lots
North of the flats, slopes need stepped panels and posts set to the grade.
Fire hazard areas
Parts of Granada Hills are in the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the 2025 map added new areas. See our Zone 0 fence guide for rules near the home.
Pools and backyards
Many ranch homes have pools. Aluminum pool fencing gives a clean, open look around the water.
Front yards that stay open and welcoming
Granada Hills ranch homes are known for wide front lawns and low, open frontages. Most owners keep it that way with a low, open aluminum fence in front, within the 3.5-foot limit, and save the taller privacy fence for the side and rear property lines. A matching pedestrian gate at the walkway ties the front together.
Choosing a finish
Black is the most popular finish here because it disappears against landscaping and suits both ranch and updated homes. You can compare black, white and wood-look finishes side by side in the showroom.
