Artificial Turf Around a Pool: Design Ideas, Pros & Cons

Thinking about artificial turf around your pool? The honest pros and cons, what to look for, six design ideas, installation next to coping, and what drives the cost.

In brief

Yes, artificial turf works well around a pool when three things are right: a well-drained, compacted base that slopes away from the water, a clean edge detail at the coping, and a shorter, dense pile that dries and cleans easily. Patterned turf can also turn a plain pool surround into a designed surface. Walk the patterns in person before you choose.

A pool surround takes more abuse than any other part of the yard: wet feet, splashes, chlorinated water, lounge chairs and strong sun. That is why more homeowners and landscape designers are replacing patchy lawn and plain concrete with artificial turf around the pool. Done well, it stays green all year, does not track mud into the water, and softens a hardscape-heavy backyard.

This guide covers the honest pros and cons, what to look for in poolside turf, six design ideas, how installation works next to coping, and what drives the cost.

Can you put artificial turf around a pool?

Yes. Turf is a common pool surround in Southern California. The success of the project depends far more on the base and drainage under the turf than on the turf itself. Water that splashes out of the pool has to pass through the turf and drain away from the pool shell, not sit underneath it or run back into the water.

Pros and cons of turf around a pool

The main trade-off is heat: like all synthetic turf, it can get warm in direct afternoon sun. Many pool owners handle that with shade from a pergola or umbrella and a quick hose-down before swimming.

What to look for in poolside turf

  • Pile height. Shorter, denser piles dry faster and are easier to rinse and brush clean next to a pool. LuxTurf Flat Effect patterns use a single 25 mm pile, and 3D Effect patterns combine 15 mm and 25 mm piles.
  • Yarn. Polyethylene (PE) yarn is soft underfoot. LuxTurf is made with texturized PE yarn at 63,000 stitches per square meter.
  • Backing and drainage. Ask how water passes through the backing, and make sure your installer builds a permeable base beneath it. LuxTurf uses a PP and net backing.
  • Infill. Ask your installer which infill suits a wet, splash-prone area.
  • Roll width and seams. Fewer seams look cleaner along a long pool edge. LuxTurf rolls are 13 feet wide, which helps when planning the layout.
  • See it and feel it. How turf looks wet, how it takes the light and how it feels under bare feet is hard to judge from a photo.

6 design ideas for turf around a pool

1. A soft band between the coping and the fence

A strip of turf between the pool coping and the pool fence softens the whole perimeter and gives a clean, green edge against black or bronze aluminum. Pair it with an aluminum pool fence in the same color as your other fencing.

2. A patterned turf “rug” for the lounge area

Instead of plain green, use a patterned turf where the loungers sit, so the area reads like an outdoor rug. Flowing patterns such as Wave and WaveFlow echo the water, while Chevron Flow gives a crisp, tailored look.

3. A paver look without hard pavers

If you like the look of pavers but want something softer underfoot, the Paver and Roma Pave 3D Effect patterns give that geometry in turf, with the design standing out in relief.

4. A shaded pergola zone beside the pool

Shade is the best answer to warm turf. A louvered aluminum pergola next to the pool creates a cooler lounge zone, and the louvers let you choose sun or shade through the day.

5. A turf path from the house to the pool

A turf walkway or stepping-stone path from the back door to the pool gives bare feet a softer route and keeps grass clippings out of the water.

6. A designed wall behind the pool

Finish the view with a decorative aluminum panel wall or privacy screen behind the pool, so turf, fence and wall read as one outdoor room.

How turf is installed next to a pool

Every site is different, but a good poolside installation usually follows these steps:

  • Remove existing grass and soil to the right depth.
  • Build and compact a permeable base, sloped so water drains away from the pool.
  • Add an edge restraint where the turf meets planters or paving.
  • Lay the turf with seams planned along the pool, then trim it neatly at the coping.
  • Secure the edges and brush the pile up.

We install through our licensed installation partners, and they can assess your drainage and edges on site.

Pool fence rules still apply

Turf does not change the barrier requirements around a pool. Check your city’s pool barrier rules before you finalize the layout, and see our aluminum pool fence page for fence and gate options.

What affects the cost of poolside turf

  • The square footage and the shape of the area (curves and cut-outs add trimming time).
  • Removal of existing grass or concrete, and the depth of the new base.
  • Drainage work needed to move water away from the pool.
  • The pattern you choose and how many seams the layout needs.
  • Edges, borders and any pergola or fence work done at the same time.

LuxTurf is sold by the square foot from 13 foot wide rolls, with a 130 square foot minimum and full 650 square foot rolls for larger projects and trade orders. Request a free quote with a few photos and rough measurements.

Caring for turf around a pool

  • Rinse the turf now and then to wash off chlorinated or salt water splashes and body oils.
  • Brush the pile up with a stiff broom in high-traffic spots.
  • Clear leaves and debris with a leaf blower or rake so they do not reach the pool.

Walk the patterns before you choose

Patterned turf is a material you need to see in person. At our Panorama City showroom, all twelve LuxTurf patterns are laid out on the floor, and you can walk on every one, next to our pergolas, fences and screens. We are open Monday to Friday 8 to 5, and Sunday 10 to 4 by appointment. For more, read why artificial turf is a smarter choice and our guide to HOA-approved artificial grass in California.
