Best Fence Installation in Pacific Palisades

Aluminum fence, gates and privacy fence for Pacific Palisades homes and rebuilds, planned around Los Angeles height rules, the Coastal Zone and California’s new rules for the space closest to the house. Installed through our licensed installation partners.

Fencing for Pacific Palisades Homes and Rebuilds

Pacific Palisades sits where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the ocean, a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles with canyon streets, coastal bluffs and hillside lots. Since the January 2025 Palisades Fire, much of the community is rebuilding.

For owners rebuilding, the fence is often one of the last pieces of the project, but it is worth planning early. Fire rules now shape what can go near the house, coastal rules can apply on lots near the bluffs, and the city’s height limits still apply. For homes that were spared, many owners are replacing wood fencing next to the house with metal.

We supply aluminum fence, gates and posts from our showroom in Panorama City, and we install through our licensed installation partners. Builders working on Palisades rebuilds can also buy direct.

Pacific Palisades Fence Height Rules

Pacific Palisades follows City of Los Angeles fence rules:

  • Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential zones, or 6 feet on A or RA zoned lots.
  • Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, which covers much of the Palisades, the limit is 6 feet.
  • Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit.

For rebuilds, the Mayor’s emergency orders allow like-for-like rebuilding up to 110 percent of the previous footprint and height, including supporting work like retaining walls, without separate coastal or environmental review for conforming projects.

Rebuilding After the Palisades Fire

Most of the Palisades is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. If you are rebuilding, the fence next to the house deserves as much thought as the house itself.

California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say:

  • Combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home.
  • Where an existing fence attaches to the house, or comes within a foot of it, the first 5 feet must be noncombustible.
  • Once the rules take effect, no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home.

Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in Pacific Palisades

The Coastal Zone

Part of the Palisades is inside the California Coastal Zone. Lots near the coastal bluffs and canyons can have setback rules, and some projects need coastal review. Ask the city how your lot is treated before planning a fence near a bluff.

Palisades Highlands

The Highlands was developed under its own coastal permit, with an urban limit line and open-space lots where no structures are allowed. Make sure your fence stays on the buildable part of the lot.

Hillside and canyon lots

Steep canyon lots need posts set to the grade and panels stepped down the slope, which aluminum handles cleanly. Hillside lots are held to 6 feet on the side and rear.

Ocean views

Many Palisades homes have views toward the ocean. An open aluminum style on the view side and a privacy style along neighbors keeps both.

Working with your builder

On a rebuild, the fence ties into grading, retaining walls and landscaping. We are happy to work with your builder so the fence package arrives when the site is ready.
