Best Fence Installation in Malibu

Open, view-friendly aluminum fence and gates for Malibu homes and rebuilds, planned around Malibu’s coastal rules and California’s new rules for the space closest to the house. Installed through our licensed installation partners.

Fencing for Malibu Homes and Rebuilds

Malibu is a city stretched along 21 miles of coast, entirely inside the California Coastal Zone and, under the state’s fire maps, entirely in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Parts of the city, including Big Rock along Pacific Coast Highway, were burned in the January 2025 Palisades Fire.

Those two facts shape every fence in Malibu. Coastal rules protect ocean views and wildlife movement, which favors open, see-through fencing. Fire rules restrict flammable fences close to the house. A powder-coated aluminum fence fits both: it can be built open to keep views, and it is a metal that does not burn the way wood does.

We supply aluminum fence, gates and posts from our showroom in Panorama City, and we install through our licensed installation partners. Builders working on Malibu rebuilds can buy direct.

How Fence Rules Work in Malibu

Malibu sets its own fence and wall rules through its zoning code and its Local Coastal Program. A few things are true across the city:

  • Everything is in the Coastal Zone. Depending on the project, a fence may need a coastal development permit or may qualify for an exemption. The city publishes an exemption checklist for repair and maintenance work.
  • Open fencing has a definition. Malibu’s coastal plan defines open, non-view-obscuring fencing as 90 percent open to light and air. Open designs are the usual way to protect views.
  • Front yards stay lower than side and rear yards, and retaining walls have their own limits.
  • Habitat areas can add conditions, such as open rail fencing that lets wildlife pass, set project by project.

Ask the Malibu Planning Department for the exact heights and permit path for your lot before ordering.

Rebuilding After the Palisades Fire

All of Malibu is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. If you are rebuilding, plan the fence near the house with the state’s new rules in mind.

California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say:

  • Combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home.
  • Where an existing fence attaches to the house, or comes within a foot of it, the first 5 feet must be noncombustible.
  • Once the rules take effect, no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home.

Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in Malibu

Protecting ocean views

Malibu’s open-fencing standard is about keeping views and light. Slim aluminum pickets, set with wide spacing, can stay see-through while still defining the property and keeping pets in.

Wildlife and habitat areas

Hillside lots near sensitive habitat can carry extra fencing conditions, such as open rail designs that let wildlife pass. These are set project by project, so check with the city if your lot borders open space.

Pacific Coast Highway rebuilds

Along PCH, rebuilds often combine retaining walls, steep driveways and gates. Sliding aluminum gates work well where there is no flat space for a swing gate.

Coastal air

Salt air is hard on painted steel. Ask us about finishes and maintenance for oceanfront properties; an occasional fresh-water rinse keeps any metal fence looking its best.

Larger properties

Long perimeter runs on bigger lots make low maintenance the deciding factor. Aluminum never needs painting or staining.
