Fencing for Bel Air Estates

Bel Air is a hillside neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, rising from Sunset Boulevard into the Santa Monica Mountains between Beverly Glen and the 405. Its winding streets, gated entrances and large estates make the fence and the gate part of the architecture.

Bel Air owners usually want three things from a fence: security that does not look like security, privacy from winding roads above and below, and a gate that makes a proper entrance. On steep lots, the fence also has to follow the hillside cleanly and respect the city’s hillside height limits.

Fire is part of the conversation here too. Parts of Bel Air are in the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the city’s mountain fire district was created after the 1961 Bel Air Fire. Every finish and gate style we mention is on display in our Panorama City showroom.

Bel Air Fence Height Rules

This is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, so fences follow the city zoning code and the Department of Building and Safety:

  • Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential (R) zones, or 6 feet on lots zoned A or RA. Taller front fences need City Planning approval.
  • Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide and outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, or lots narrower than 40 feet, the limit is 6 feet.
  • Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit.

Most of Bel Air is hillside, so side and rear fences there are usually limited to 6 feet. Bel Air is also under the city’s Hillside Construction Regulations, which limit grading, hauling and construction hours on larger projects. Check your parcel on the city ZIMAS map before you settle on heights.

Fire Safety and Fencing in Bel Air

Bel Air Estates is among the communities the LAFD lists as partly inside the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the 2017 Skirball Fire destroyed homes in the area.

California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home, and that no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home once the rules take effect.

Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in Bel Air

Gated entries

On an estate, the driveway gate sets the tone. Aluminum sliding and double swing gates are made in the same slat and finish as the fence, so the entrance and the perimeter read as one design.

Steep, winding lots

Bel Air lots climb and drop sharply. Posts are set to the grade and panels stepped down the slope so the lines stay level. Aluminum is light, which helps on hard-to-reach hillside runs.

Privacy from roads above and below

Winding streets mean neighbors can look down into a yard. A fully closed or high-privacy aluminum fence on the exposed sides, and an open style on the view side, balances privacy and view.

Long perimeters, low upkeep

Large properties mean long fence lines. Powder-coated aluminum does not rot, rust or need repainting, so the whole perimeter stays consistent.

Construction logistics

Hillside construction rules limit hauling and work hours. Lightweight aluminum panels are easier to bring up narrow streets than heavy masonry.
