Best Fence Installation in La Cañada Flintridge

Aluminum fence, gated entries and hillside fencing for La Cañada Flintridge homes, planned around the city’s fence code and the state’s new rules for the space closest to the house. Installed through our licensed installation partners.

Fencing for La Cañada Flintridge Homes

La Cañada Flintridge is a hillside city at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, between Pasadena and Glendale. Large lots, winding streets, an equestrian trail network and the national forest at its edge shape how fences are built here.

The city allows taller front fences than many neighbors, up to 6 feet, with entry gates taller still, and it allows 8-foot fences next to its trails and open space. That makes gated entries and secure perimeters very achievable. Fire is the other big factor: much of the city is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and residents were under evacuation orders during the January 2025 Eaton Fire, though the city reported no active fire inside its limits.

We supply aluminum fence, gates and posts from our showroom in Panorama City, and we install through our licensed installation partners.

La Cañada Flintridge Fence Rules

La Cañada Flintridge sets its R-1 fence rules in Municipal Code Section 11.11.050(E):

  • Front and street side: 42 inches by right; above that, up to 6 feet, with pillars up to 6 feet 6 inches and entry gates up to 8 feet 6 inches (7 feet overall with a light fixture).
  • Side and rear: 6 feet, or 8 feet next to Trails Master Plan trails, open space or non-single-family zones.
  • Retaining walls: 5 feet 6 inches facing in, 3 feet 6 inches facing out.
  • Permits: all fences and walls over 42 inches need a building permit. Neighbors are notified for property-line fences, and a survey is required unless neighbors waive it in writing.
  • Hillside lots: lots with an average slope of 15 percent or more need a Hillside Development Permit for building-permit projects.

Fire Safety and Fencing in La Cañada Flintridge

La Cañada Flintridge has Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones under LA County’s 2025 ordinance, and the 2009 Station Fire started in the Angeles National Forest just above the city.

California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home, and that no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home once the rules take effect.

Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in La Cañada Flintridge

Gated entries

With entry gates allowed up to 8 feet 6 inches, a matching aluminum driveway gate can make a strong, secure entrance.

Trails and open space

Where a lot backs onto a Trails Master Plan trail or open space, side and rear fences can be 8 feet. Open styles keep the trail feeling open; closed styles add privacy.

Hillside lots

Steeper lots may need a Hillside Development Permit. Posts are set to the grade and panels stepped down the slope.

Property-line fences

For property-line fences, the city notifies neighbors and requires a survey unless neighbors waive it in writing. Plan time for that step.

Large lots, low upkeep

Powder-coated aluminum never needs painting, which matters on long runs around larger lots.
