Fencing for Altadena Homes and Rebuilds
Altadena sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena. It is an unincorporated community, so Los Angeles County, not a city, sets its rules. The January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed thousands of homes here, and much of Altadena is now rebuilding.
Altadena has its own fence standards under the county’s Altadena Community Standards District, and the county has issued special guidance for fire rebuilds. On top of that, the state’s new Zone 0 rules affect what can go within 5 feet of a home in high fire hazard areas. Getting these right before ordering avoids rework later.
We supply aluminum fence, gates and posts from our showroom in Panorama City, and we install through our licensed installation partners. Rebuild contractors can buy direct.
Altadena Fence Rules
Altadena follows Los Angeles County zoning, with extra standards from the Altadena Community Standards District:
- Front yard: fences and hedges are limited to 42 inches in the R-1 zone. Many existing front fences were taller.
- Registration: owners who registered an existing taller front fence may keep it until 2034.
- Fire rebuilds: under the county’s disaster-recovery interpretation, a rebuild may restore a non-conforming front fence or hedge without registering it, as long as it meets driveway visibility rules. Anything in the public right-of-way must meet county Public Works requirements.
Side and rear limits follow county zoning; confirm your lot with LA County Planning.

Rebuilding After the Eaton Fire
Many Altadena foothill neighborhoods are in high fire hazard areas. If you are rebuilding, plan the fence near the house with the new state rules in mind.
California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say:
- Combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home.
- Where an existing fence attaches to the house, or comes within a foot of it, the first 5 feet must be noncombustible.
- Once the rules take effect, no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home.
Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in Altadena
The 42-inch front-yard standard
Altadena’s front-yard limit keeps streets open and neighborly. A low, open aluminum fence at 42 inches gives a finished frontage, with a taller privacy fence on the sides and back.
Restoring a front fence after the fire
If your home had a taller front fence before the fire, the county’s rebuild guidance may let you restore it. Check the driveway visibility rules and confirm with LA County Planning.
Foothill lots
Lots toward the mountains slope and catch wind. Aluminum panels step down a slope and slatted styles let wind through.
Character and craftsman homes
Altadena is known for craftsman, Spanish and mid-century homes. A black aluminum picket or slat fence suits them without competing with the architecture.
