Best Fence Installation in Porter Ranch

Aluminum fence, privacy fence and gates for Porter Ranch homes in the Santa Susana foothills. Supplied from our showroom in Panorama City and installed through our licensed installation partners.

Fencing for Porter Ranch Homes

Porter Ranch sits in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains at the northwest edge of the San Fernando Valley. It was the last part of the city’s Valley to be developed, and much of it is master-planned, with many gated communities.

That history shapes fence projects here. Homes are newer, neighborhoods are designed to look consistent, and many owners need their community’s approval before changing a fence. Foothill lots bring slopes, and the open hillsides beyond the last streets bring wind and wildfire concerns.

We are about twenty minutes from Porter Ranch. Bring your community’s fence guidelines to the showroom and we will help you choose a style, color and height that fits them.

Porter Ranch Fence Height Rules

Porter Ranch is part of the City of Los Angeles, so city zoning rules apply on top of any community guidelines.

  • Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential (R) zones, or 6 feet on lots zoned A or RA. Taller front fences need City Planning approval.
  • Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide and outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, or lots narrower than 40 feet, the limit is 6 feet.
  • Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit from LADBS.

Because so much of Porter Ranch is on foothill slopes, many lots fall in a hillside area, where side and rear fences are limited to 6 feet rather than 8.

What Shapes a Fence in Porter Ranch

Community and HOA guidelines

Many Porter Ranch neighborhoods are gated, master-planned communities. If yours has an HOA, check its fence rules on style, color and height before ordering. We can provide product details and photos for your application.

Foothill slopes

Sloped yards need panels stepped down the grade and posts placed to suit it. Aluminum keeps the run light and straight.

Wind off the hills

Open slopes can bring strong wind. A solid fence catches more of it, so post spacing matters, and louvered or slatted styles let some wind pass through.

Fire hazard areas

Porter Ranch is partly in the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, next to wildland on the Santa Susana slopes. Our Zone 0 fence guide explains the rules for the area right around the home.

Newer homes, clean lines

Contemporary homes here pair well with horizontal aluminum slats or a tailored vertical style, in black or a neutral finish that suits community color rules.

Planning a backyard with a view

Many Porter Ranch backyards look out over the Valley or onto open hillside. A common approach is a closed privacy fence along the side property lines, where neighbors are close, and a lower or more open fence across the back, so the view stays part of the yard. Where the back of the lot drops away, a stepped run keeps the top line clean.

Planning for kids and pets

Families often ask for gates that self-close and latch, and for slat spacing that keeps small pets in. Tell us how you use the yard and we will suggest panels and gate hardware to match.

Yes, we do. We install through our licensed installation partners. We supply the fence, gates and hardware from our Panorama City showroom.

How tall can a fence be in Porter Ranch?

Porter Ranch follows City of Los Angeles rules: generally 3.5 feet in the front yard and up to 8 feet on the side and rear of wide flat lots, but 6 feet on hillside-area lots, which includes many foothill properties.

Do I need HOA approval for a new fence?

If your neighborhood has an HOA, most likely yes. Get its guidelines first, and we will help you choose a style, color and height that fits them.

Which fence handles wind best?

Slatted and louvered aluminum styles let some wind through, while a fully closed fence needs closer post spacing. We can help you choose for an exposed lot.
