Best Fence Installation in San Marino

Fencing for San Marino Homes
San Marino is a small, residential city next to Pasadena, known for its estates, tree-lined streets and carefully kept front yards. Its fence rules are among the most detailed in the region, and any fence facing a street goes through design review.
San Marino’s code limits how solid a front fence can be as it gets taller: above 3 feet 6 inches, a front fence can be no more than 25 percent solid. That is a natural fit for an open aluminum picket fence, which stays light and see-through while still securing the property.
We supply aluminum fence, gates and posts from our showroom in Panorama City, and we install through our licensed installation partners. We can provide product details and photos for your design review submittal.
San Marino Fence Rules
San Marino sets its R-1 fence rules in Municipal Code Section 23.13.04:
- Front yard height: 4 feet in Area Districts III to VII, and 5 feet 6 inches in Districts I and II, set back 18 inches from the front line. Pilasters may be 6 inches taller.
- Front yard openness: solid up to 3 feet; no more than 50 percent solid from 3 feet to 3 feet 6 inches; no more than 25 percent solid above 3 feet 6 inches.
- Side and rear: 6 feet (4 feet at certain corner and alley locations).
- Not allowed: chain link or wire in front and street-facing side yards; barbed, hog wire and electric fences.
- Permits and review: a fence permit is required for any fence, gate, pilaster or wall, and any street-facing fence goes to Design Review.

What Shapes a Fence in San Marino
Design review
The Design Review Committee looks at how a street-facing fence fits the house and the other fences on the block, and at sight lines. A simple, open aluminum fence in black is often an easy match for San Marino’s traditional homes.
The openness rule
Because a front fence must be mostly open above 3 feet 6 inches, slim aluminum pickets with generous spacing work well, keeping the front garden visible from the street.
Estate lots and mature trees
Large lots and old trees mean posts should be placed around roots. Plan the run with your landscape in mind.
Pilasters and gates
Many San Marino frontages combine masonry pilasters with metal infill. Aluminum panels and gates can sit between pilasters for a classic look.
Privacy at the back
Side and rear fences can be up to 6 feet, so a closed aluminum privacy fence works well behind the front setback.
Low upkeep
Powder-coated aluminum never needs painting, which keeps a street-facing fence looking as good as the day the Committee approved it.
A neighborhood of traditional homes
San Marino is known for Colonial, Tudor, Spanish and other traditional homes on generous lots. The city’s design review compares a new fence to the house and to other fences on the block, so a restrained design usually works best: a simple black picket, evenly spaced, with gates that match. You can compare picket spacing and finishes in our showroom before you submit.
Fire hazard areas
The city has a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone with annual inspections. Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation; ask us for a copy.
