- Side and rear, next to another parcel: fences up to 7 feet need a Fence/Wall Permit, with some exemptions, for example where the grade difference across the line is 2 feet or less.
- View finding: approval requires a finding that the fence will not significantly impair a neighbor’s view.
- Replacements: replacing a damaged fence at the same or lower height and type does not need a permit.
- Chain link: not allowed along arterial streets.
- Build first, pay more: the permit fee doubles if the fence is built before the permit.

Fire Safety and Fencing in Rancho Palos Verdes
Rancho Palos Verdes has Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and the city adopted the state’s 2025 maps effective January 1, 2026.
California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home, and that no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home once the rules take effect.
