Best Fence Installation in Tarzana

Aluminum fence, gated entries and privacy fence for Tarzana homes, from the flat blocks north of Ventura Boulevard to the hillside estates in the Santa Monica Mountains. Supplied from our showroom and installed through our licensed installation partners.

Fencing for Tarzana Homes

Tarzana sits between Encino and Woodland Hills, about twenty minutes from our showroom. The blocks north of Ventura Boulevard are flat and residential, while the hills to the south hold larger estate properties with long driveways and views across the Valley.

Estate homes in the Tarzana hills usually need a gated entry, a long perimeter run and privacy that does not look heavy. Homes on the flat side are more about side-yard privacy and a neat front fence. We see both regularly, and our Encino hillside project next door is a good picture of what a Ridgeline fence looks like on this kind of terrain.

Every style below is in our Panorama City showroom, so you can compare slat sizes, finishes and gate types side by side before you commit.

Tarzana Fence Height Rules

Tarzana is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, so the city zoning code and the Department of Building and Safety set fence heights.

  • Front yard: up to 3.5 feet in most residential (R) zones, or 6 feet on lots zoned A or RA. Taller front fences need City Planning approval.
  • Side and rear yards: up to 8 feet on lots at least 40 feet wide and outside a hillside area. On hillside-area lots, or lots narrower than 40 feet, the limit is 6 feet.
  • Permits: masonry or concrete walls over 3.5 feet need a building permit from LADBS.

In the Tarzana hills the hillside rule is the one to watch: side and rear fences are capped at 6 feet there. Some Tarzana lots are zoned RA, which allows a front fence up to 6 feet. Your parcel’s zone is listed on the city ZIMAS map.

What Shapes a Fence in Tarzana

Gated estate entries

A long driveway usually means a sliding or double swing gate as the centerpiece of the fence. Choosing the gate first, then matching the fence to it, gives the most finished look.

Hillside lots

Slopes need posts placed to the grade and panels stepped so the lines stay level. Open styles suit the view side; closed styles suit the neighbors.

Mulholland Scenic Parkway

Tarzana properties near Mulholland Drive can fall inside the Mulholland Scenic Parkway Specific Plan, which controls materials for fences and walls visible from the parkway. Ask the city if you are close to Mulholland.

Fire hazard areas

Parts of the Tarzana hills are in the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. See our Zone 0 fence guide for the rules on the space nearest the home.

Long perimeter runs

On a large property, upkeep is the real cost of a fence. Powder-coated aluminum does not rot or rust and never needs repainting, so a long run stays looking new.

Privacy without a heavy wall

Many Tarzana owners want privacy from the street but do not want a block wall that closes the property in. Horizontal aluminum slats set close together give that privacy while still reading as a designed fence, and the slim profile keeps a large frontage from feeling like a fortress.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install fences in Tarzana?

Yes, we do. We install through our licensed installation partners. We supply the fence, gates and hardware from our Panorama City showroom.

How tall can a fence be in Tarzana?

Tarzana follows City of Los Angeles rules: generally 3.5 feet in the front yard and up to 8 feet on the side and rear of wide flat lots. Hillside-area lots are limited to 6 feet on the side and rear. RA-zoned lots can have front fences up to 6 feet.

What gate works best for a long, sloped driveway?

A sliding gate usually works best, because it does not need flat ground to swing open. On level driveways, a double swing gate is a classic choice.

Does the Mulholland plan affect Tarzana fences?

It can, for properties near Mulholland Drive where the fence is visible from the parkway. Ask the city about your parcel before ordering.

Can I match the gate and fence exactly?

Yes. Every Lumina aluminum series has pedestrian, double swing and sliding gates in the same slat and finish as the fence.

Can I see the fences before I decide?

Yes. Visit our showroom at 14600 Arminta St, Panorama City, Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm, or Sunday 10 am to 4 pm by appointment.

Do you supply contractors working in Tarzana?

Yes. Contractors and builders buy aluminum fence, gates and posts from us for their own projects. Call (818) 647-0007 or see our wholesale page.
