A metal privacy screen does in an afternoon what a hedge takes years to do. Set a panel between your patio and the neighbors, in front of the pool equipment, or along a balcony rail, and the view you wanted to hide becomes a piece of architecture. Lumina’s outdoor privacy screens are laser cut from aluminum and finished in a powder coat, so they hold their color outdoors and never need painting.
Metal privacy screen patterns
The pattern decides how much a screen hides. Dense cuts block the view almost completely; open, organic cuts filter it while letting light and air through.
Harmony
A fine, dense pattern that reads almost solid from a distance. The choice when the goal is to block the view.
View panel
Wave Flow
Long, flowing diagonal cuts that come alive when the screen is lit from behind at night.
View panel
Wave
Horizontal waves with a calm, rhythmic line. A natural fit beside a pool or water feature.
View panel
Leaf
A palm-leaf cut that blends into planting and casts soft leaf shadows across a garden wall.
View panel
Every pattern comes in 3 x 6 ft and 3 x 8 ft panels. See the full range on our decorative metal panels page.
Where outdoor metal privacy screens work best
Patios and lounges
Create a private outdoor room without building a wall. Screens shelter a seating area from neighbors and the street.
Pool equipment and AC units
Hide pumps, filters and condensers. The open pattern lets air move, which equipment needs.
Balconies and rooftops
Add privacy and wind shelter to a balcony or roof deck while keeping light coming through.
Property lines and side yards
Break up a long fence line, or screen a side yard where a solid fence would feel heavy.
Gardens and entries
Frame an entry, divide a garden into rooms, or give planting a sculptural backdrop.
Facades and feature walls
Fixed to a wall, a panel becomes a feature that changes with the light through the day.

Why an aluminum privacy screen
Wood screens weather and need staining, fabric fades and tears, and steel can rust where the coating chips. An aluminum privacy screen avoids all three. Lumina panels are cut from aluminum and powder coated, so the openings stay crisp and the finish holds its color in the sun. Planning a rebuild? Read how California’s Zone 0 fence rules affect what goes within five feet of a home.
No repainting
A powder-coated finish built for outdoor use, with no staining or sealing.
Light to handle
Aluminum panels are far lighter than steel or masonry, which keeps mounting simple.
Privacy screen panels, sized to plan with
Every pattern is made in two panel sizes, 3 x 6 ft and 3 x 8 ft, so a run of screens can be planned like a fence: one panel for a quiet corner, several in a row for a full privacy wall. For a full-height fence instead, see our aluminum privacy fence.
Panels can be set into a frame, fixed between posts, or mounted to a wall. Bring your measurements to the showroom and our team will help you choose the pattern, size and mounting for the space. For a finished look at night, light the screen from behind and the pattern glows.
How to choose a metal privacy screen
Three questions settle most decisions. Answer them before you visit and choosing the right screen takes minutes.
1. How much do you want to hide?
If the goal is to block a neighbor’s window or a street view completely, start with a dense pattern such as Harmony. If you only want to soften a view and keep the garden feeling open, Wave, Leaf or Chevron filter the view instead of blocking it.
2. Where does the light come from?
A cut pattern changes through the day. Low afternoon sun throws the pattern across the patio floor as shadow. At night, a light placed behind the screen makes the openings glow, which is why many owners make the screen part of their landscape lighting plan.
3. How long is the run?
Measure the length you want to screen and divide by the 3 ft panel width. A 12 ft side yard takes four panels; a patio corner may need only one or two. Choose 3 x 8 ft panels where you need extra height, such as beside a raised deck.
Not sure which pattern suits the space? Bring a photo and your measurements to the showroom and we will lay the options out side by side.
Ways to mount an outdoor metal privacy screen
Lumina’s screens are flat panels, so they adapt to the way you want to use the space. These are the setups we plan most often with homeowners, designers and landscape contractors.
Freestanding between posts
A row of panels set between posts becomes a stand-alone screen wall at the edge of a patio, around a spa, or across a side yard. Posts go into the ground in planted areas, or mount to the surface on concrete and pavers.
Fixed to a wall or fence
Mounted on an existing block wall or fence, a panel adds height and pattern without building anything new. It is a simple way to turn a plain wall into a feature behind an outdoor kitchen or seating area.
Beside a pergola or deck
Panels along one or two sides of a pergola or raised deck give the space a sense of enclosure on the side that faces the neighbors, while the other sides stay open to the yard.
Around equipment
Two or three panels in an L or U shape hide pool pumps, AC condensers or trash bins. Leave an opening for service access, and keep the clearance your equipment maker recommends.

Metal privacy screens compared with other options
Most people weigh four ways to add privacy outdoors. Here is how they compare in everyday use.
| Option | Upkeep | Privacy and look |
|---|---|---|
| Powder-coated aluminum screen | No rot, rust or repainting; rinse with a hose | Private from day one; the pattern adds design and lets light and air through |
| Wood screen or lattice | Staining or sealing every few years; can warp, crack and fade | Warm, natural look; solid boards block airflow |
| Fabric or vinyl screen | Fabric fades and tears in sun and wind; needs replacing | Quick to put up; limited style |
| Living hedge | Watering, trimming and years to fill in | Soft and green; full privacy only once mature |
If you need privacy along a whole property line rather than a single screen, see our aluminum privacy fence styles. Many projects use both: a privacy fence on the boundary and a patterned screen as the feature near the house.
Outdoor privacy screen questions
Are metal privacy screens good for outdoor use?
Yes. Powder-coated aluminum is well suited to outdoor use. It does not rot or warp like wood, and it does not tear or fade like fabric screens.
What sizes do the privacy screen panels come in?
Every Lumina pattern is available in 3 x 6 ft and 3 x 8 ft panels. Several panels can be placed side by side to screen a longer run.
Which pattern gives the most privacy?
Harmony, with its fine, dense pattern, blocks the most view. Wave, Wave Flow, Leaf and Chevron are more open and filter the view while letting light and air through.
Can a privacy screen hide pool equipment or an AC unit?
Yes. That is one of the most common uses. The cut pattern hides the equipment from view while still letting air circulate around it.
Are the screens aluminum or steel?
Lumina outdoor privacy screens are made from aluminum with a powder-coated finish.
How many privacy screen panels do I need?
Divide the length you want to screen by 3 ft, the width of each panel. A 12 ft run takes four panels. Our team can help you plan the layout from your measurements.
Can I light a privacy screen at night?
Yes. A low light placed behind the panel and aimed at the screen makes the cut pattern glow after dark. It is one of the most striking ways to use a decorative screen.
How do I clean an aluminum privacy screen?
Rinse it with a garden hose. For dirt that stays, wash it with water, a mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, which can scratch the powder-coated finish.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor privacy screen?
It depends on your city and on the height and location of the screen. Many cities limit fence and screen height along property lines, so check with your local building department before you build. Our team can help you plan a layout that works within your city’s limits.
Can I add a privacy screen to a pergola?
Yes. Panels can be set along one or more sides of a pergola to block a neighbor’s view while the other sides stay open. Lumina also offers louvered pergolas, so you can plan both together in our showroom.
Does Lumina install privacy screens?
Installation is available through our licensed installation partner. Request a quote with your measurements and a photo of the space, and our team will take it from there.
