Best Fence Installation in Thousand Oaks
Aluminum fence, gates and pool fence for Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park homes, planned around the city’s fence rules and Oak Tree ordinance. Supplied from our showroom and installed through our licensed installation partners.
Fencing for Thousand Oaks Homes
Thousand Oaks is a Ventura County city in the Conejo Valley, just west of Westlake Village, known for its oak-covered hills and open space. Its oaks are protected by city ordinance, which affects where fence posts can go.
Fence projects here usually involve three things: the city’s height limits, the Oak Tree ordinance for any work near protected oaks, and HOA guidelines in many neighborhoods. Wildfire is part of the picture too; the 2018 Woolsey and Hill Fires reached parts of the city and nearby Newbury Park.
Our Westlake Village project, minutes away, shows a Hampton fence, gate and decorative panels that suit this part of the Conejo Valley. We install through our licensed installation partners.
Thousand Oaks Fence Rules
Thousand Oaks sets its fence rules in Municipal Code Section 9-4.2509:
- Front yard: 3 feet, where the zone allows a front-yard fence.
- Side and rear: 6 feet, and not closer than 10 feet to the front lot line. Up to 9 feet for noise reduction with Director or Planning Commission approval.
- Corner lots: need sight-line sign-off from the Traffic Engineer or Director.
- Front-yard pilasters (single-family): pilasters up to 48 inches with solid fill up to 30 inches; the code lets wrought iron fencing between pilasters match the pilaster height. Ask the city whether open aluminum is treated the same way. Pilasters over 30 inches need a building permit.
Oak trees: all oaks over 2 inches in diameter are protected. The protected zone extends 5 feet beyond the canopy or 15 feet from the trunk, whichever is greater, and a permit is required for any work affecting the tree or the soil in that zone, including digging fence posts.

Fire Safety and Fencing in Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks has some of the largest Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone areas in Ventura County under the new state maps, and the 2018 Woolsey Fire reached parts of the city.
California’s new Zone 0 rules cover the first 5 feet around a home in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The state Board of Forestry adopted them in August 2026, and they take effect once the state finishes its final review. As adopted, they say combustible fences and gates may not be attached to a home, and that no new combustible fences or gates are allowed within 5 feet of a home once the rules take effect.
Lumina aluminum fence systems are noncombustible, based on the manufacturer’s fire test documentation, which makes them a strong choice for the run closest to the house. Ask us for a copy of the documents. Fire rules are still being finalized, so confirm current requirements with your fire department or building department before you build. Our Zone 0 fence guide has more detail.

What Shapes a Fence in Thousand Oaks
Working around oaks
Before digging near an oak, check whether the posts fall inside the protected zone. A fence layout can often be adjusted to avoid it, or a permit obtained.
HOA neighborhoods
Many Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park neighborhoods have HOAs with fence guidelines. Check yours first; we can provide product details for your application.
Noise along busy roads
Homes along the 101 and major roads can ask for taller side and rear fences for noise reduction, with city approval.
Hillside and open-space lots
Lots backing onto open space or hills need stepped panels and careful post placement.
